February 7 - Genesis 12

Today's reading in our daily plan is Genesis 12. Take a moment to pray, asking God to speak to you from this passage. Then read, using the following notes and questions to help you get everything out of the passage.

SAY WHAT? (What is the passage saying?)

  • In this chapter we start reading the account of the life of Abram. He starts off named Abram and later God changes his name to Abraham.
  • We see that Abram was a man of great faith in God.
  • We also see in this chapter that Abram sometimes falters in his trust that God would protect him. When he went to Egypt, Abram wouldn’t even admit he had a wife. God protected Sarai from being disgraced and, in the end, provided a way for Abram and his family to leave Egypt.

SO WHAT? (What are the underlying principles?)

  • God told Abram to leave all he knew and promised he would give Abram children and a land of his own. (Remember yesterday we learned Sarai, Abram’s wife, wasn’t able to have children.) Without knowing any details Abram obeyed, took his family and started walking.
  • With Abram, we learn that even people of great faith in the Bible have times of doubt. So we can be at ease when we do as well. It’s normal.

NOW WHAT? (How will you personally apply this passage?)

  • Living in a relationship with God can be difficult because we can’t see him or audibly hear his voice. It requires faith in his promptings and in what the Bible says.
  • Do you sometimes have difficulty trusting God? We all do, but we have to learn to trust him one day at a time. What is a specific area in which you're currently struggling to trust God? Could you commit to trusting him in that area? What could you do to grow in your trust? Who could you get to help you?
