February 20 - Genesis 15

Today's reading in our daily plan is Genesis 15. Take a moment to pray, asking God to speak to you from this passage. Then read, using the following notes and questions to help you get everything out of the passage.

SAY WHAT? (What is the passage saying?)

  • At the start of this chapter we read a conversation between God and Abram.
  • Then God has Abram kill some animals and make a strange walkway.
  • Abram falls into a deep sleep and God foretells to him how the nation of Israel (Abram’s descendants) will be enslaved by the Egyptians but God will free them. We read about this later in the Bible.

SO WHAT? (What are the underlying principles?)

  • Abram is having a difficult time trusting in God’s promise to bless him with children. But God reassures him and Abram makes the choice to believe God’s promise.
  • Animal sacrifices are difficult for us to grasp today but it was a religious practice God asked of people who followed him before Jesus was on earth. We’re not totally sure why God demanded animal sacrifices, but maybe the act of sacrificing an animal would impress upon us the significance of our sins and promises to live for God.

NOW WHAT? (How will you personally apply this passage?)

  • We have difficulty trusting God just like Abram did in our reading today. In this chapter we read about how Abram had to make the decision to have faith in God’s promises. How do we have faith in God? We have to remember that faith in God isn’t something we’re born with; faith is a decision we make because we’re confident in our God. Ask God to help you make the decision to have faith in him.
