Questions: What To Do With Guilt

We provide questions each week based on the topic of our service for our Verve Groups to use. If you're not in a Verve Group, feel free to use them on your own.

This week we continued our series called Emotions by talking about What To Do With Guilt.
  1. What is the worst car you ever owned? What made it so bad?
  2. This week we talked about our hidden sins. People tend to think the worst thing that can happen is for someone to find out what they’ve done. Why do you think people fear being exposed?
  3. Vince said actually the worst thing that can happen is for no one to find out, you keep it a secret, and then one day you die a respectable fraud. Why might that truly be the worst thing?
  4. This week we looked at a time when David concealed his sin. He writes, “When I refused to confess my sin, my body wasted away, and I groaned all day long” (Psalm 32:3-4).
    • Have you ever experienced the shame and isolation and bondage of hiding your sins? What was that like for you?
  5. The Bible says, in 1 John 1:9, “But if we confess our sins to God, he can always be trusted to forgive us and take our sins away.”
    • Why do you think God forgives us when we confess? Why might confessing our sins to God be so important for us?
  6. The Bible says in James 5:16, “Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed.”
    • Why do you think confessing our sins to “each other” (to some trusted friends) is an essential part of the healing process?
  7. David described what happened after he confessed his sin with these words, “Oh, what joy…And you forgave me! All my guilt is gone. … rejoice in the Lord and be glad … Shout for joy” (Psalm 32).
    • Do you have a time you could share with us when you confessed your sin, and revealing it led to freedom from guilt and joy?
  8. No one has to, but… does anyone have anything they want to confess? If so, our rule is – as is always the case in every Verve Group – what happens in Verve Group stays in Verve Group. Your secret will be safe with us, and with God.
  9. Before we finish for the day, is there anything we could celebrate with you, or pray for you this week?
