August 1 - Psalms 80 and 81

Today's reading in our daily plan is Psalms 80 & 81. Take a moment to pray, asking God to speak to you from this passage. Then read, using the following notes and questions to help you get everything out of the passage.

SAY WHAT? (What is the passage saying?)
  • Psalm 80 starts with acknowledging God’s sovereignty over all things. The writer asks God to rescue them from their enemies. Then he says that the people will return to God. This is a common theme in the nation of Israel but it’s also prevalent in our lives too if we’re honest.
  • Psalm 81 reads like a reply from God. We’re not sure if it was the next Psalm the writer wrote or not but it would be a perfect reply. You can almost hear the pain in God’s reply; like a father wanting to help his child if the child will allow him.
SO WHAT? (What are the underlying principles?)
  • As humans, it is easy for us to drift away from the life God wants for us. This is true with everything, from seemingly small daily routines to major life decisions.
  • Thankfully, even if we might go "back and forth" in our faith, God is steady and constant.
NOW WHAT? (How will you personally apply this passage?)
  • Often our relationships with God resemble how the nation of Israel went back and forth with God. How is your relationship with God right now? Remember, he really does want a relationship with you. And he never wants you to “earn” his love again. Just turn back to him.
