Psalms 50

Today's reading in our daily plan is Psalm 50. Take a moment to pray, asking God to speak to you from this passage. Then read, using the following notes and questions to help you get everything out of the passage.

SAY WHAT? (What is the passage saying?)
  • This psalm opens telling us of the power of God. Then God speaks.
  • God tells his people that he doesn’t need their animal sacrifices because he owns the whole world. The idea of animal sacrifice may sound very strange to you, and well it kind of is. However, in the times before Jesus God allowed people to sacrifice perfect animals to “pay” for their sins. When Jesus died on the cross the “price” was paid for all sins through Jesus’ death. Now we don’t offer God animal sacrifices because they are no longer needed.
SO WHAT? (What are the underlying principles?)
  • God tells his people to follow him and serve him, and he would take care of their needs. God was telling his people that he doesn’t need their worship like he is some sad God that needs us to stroke his ego. Instead, God is letting them know that their worship of him is for them. We get to worship God. We don’t have to. That’s a big deal.
NOW WHAT? (How will you personally apply this passage?)
  • How often do you think about how powerful God is? How awesome is it that the God of all creation enjoys having a relationship with you? When was the last time you sat still and realized who God is before you spoke to him? Take time today and do that.
