Malachi 3 & 4

Today's reading in our daily plan is Malachi 3 & 4. Take a moment to pray, asking God to speak to you from this passage. Then read, using the following notes and questions to help you get everything out of the passage.

SAY WHAT? (What is the passage saying?)
  • In chapter 3, God continues to detail the ways in which His people have failed to show their love for Him. He warns that they have been holding back the tithes and offerings they are supposed to give Him.
  • For people who follow God, His power will be their gain. For people who do not follow God, they will be terrified of His power and how it works against them.
  • The book of Malachi concludes with assurances to people who have committed to follow God, and reminders of the calamity that will befall people who turn away from God.
SO WHAT? (What are the underlying principles?)
  • When we love God, we put Him first in every area of our life. This includes our finances.
  • Generous, consistent giving back to God serves as a tangible reminder of the commitment we have made to him. Many televangelists and greedy preachers have given this concept a bad rap, but God loves pure giving.
  • The word "tithe" means "tenth." God only asks us to give him a tenth of what we have.
NOW WHAT? (How will you personally apply this passage?)
  • If you're part of a local church, you have the opportunity to invest your finances in making a difference. By giving through your church, you're investing in changing the world with God's love.
  • If Verve is your church home, you can set up online giving so it happens consistently.
  • As you head into the new year, look for other ways to make God a priority (in your time, in your conversations, in your relationships, etc.). A great way to start is by attending church this weekend.
Here's a helpful video from a great resource called BibleProject that reviews and summarizes the book of Malachi:
