Nahum 1

Today's reading in our daily plan is Nahum 1. Take a moment to pray, asking God to speak to you from this passage. Then read, using the following notes and questions to help you get everything out of the passage.

SAY WHAT? (What is the passage saying?)
  • This opening chapter of the book of Nahum reiterates several qualities about God's goodness and power.
  • God is good, and he is also mighty. Nahum was writing to warn people in the city of Nineveh. People living there had abandoned God and his teachings. (This will make more sense after tomorrow's reading.)
  • This chapter could be seen as a final warning from God to give the people in Nineveh one last chance to turn away from their selfishness and turn to God.
SO WHAT? (What are the underlying principles?)
  • Thankfully, because Jesus served as the ultimate sacrifice, God no longer wipes out entire cities for failing to follow him. But in our own lives, we need to be sensitive to God's guidance.
  • If there's something in our life God is warning us to stop, or to turn over to him, we need to heed what he is saying to us.
  • If we fail to do this, our selfishness could lead to self-destruction.
NOW WHAT? (How will you personally apply this passage?)

  • Is there a secret you're holding back from someone important in your life? Are you trying to hide a sin because you're convinced you've "got it under control"? Heed God's warning. Today can be the day you confess to a trusted friend, before your habit becomes more destructive.
