Amos 5

Today's reading in our daily plan is Amos 5. Take a moment to pray, asking God to speak to you from this passage. Then read, using the following notes and questions to help you get everything out of the passage.

SAY WHAT? (What is the passage saying?)

  • In today’s chapter, Amos tells the people that Israel has fallen for the last time, “never to rise again”. God promises life for those who seek him but warns the people not to turn to idols for protection.
  • God reminds the people that he is the one who made the stars, the sky, the day and the night, and his strength and knowledge are infinite. He knows there are those who oppress the innocent, take bribes, and deprive the poor of justice in the courts (verse 12) and that pain & sadness is coming because of the choices the people have made.
  • God doesn’t want gifts from the people if they are given with false hearts. The songs, offerings, and festivities are worthless when the same gifts are given to idols and God knows the people are not truly placing their faith with him.

SO WHAT? (What are the underlying principles?)

  • God promised the people that those who sought him would live. God’s law declared that he is the only one the people should follow. The people acted like they trusted God but they tried to make a “back-up” plan with other idols and gods. Instead, they ensured their downfall and discovered the world could not protect them.
  • We are reminded in this chapter that God despises hypocrisy. He doesn’t ask for perfection but he does require a genuine heart. He can’t be fooled by a pretense of devotion.

NOW WHAT? (How will you personally apply this passage?)

  • Do you try to give yourself “better odds” by placing your faith in more than just God? Are you seeking peace at the slot machine? At the bottom of a bottle? In the fast food drive-thru? Where do you look for comfort?
  • God is always ready and waiting to offer his grace to those that lean into him. Today, ask God to fulfill his promise to renew your heart. Be honest with him and tell him if you struggle with trusting him and him alone. Sit in stillness and listen for the peace he offers you.
