Hosea 7 & 8

Today's reading in our daily plan is Hosea 7 & 8. Take a moment to pray, asking God to speak to you from this passage. Then read, using the following notes and questions to help you get everything out of the passage.

SAY WHAT? (What is the passage saying?)
  • These two chapters show the people’s actions defying the words they said to God. In Chapter 7 the people worshipped idols, lied, & robbed in public. When there were signs of approaching ruin, like grey hairs in old age, the people finally noticed and prayed to God, but God knew what they really believed.
  • In Chapter 8, the people tell God they recognized and accepted him then, they ignored God’s direction. They made sacrifices to God, then worshipped handmade idols. They howled their prayers from their mouth and seldom from their hearts.
SO WHAT? (What are the underlying principles?)
  • The people had high expectations in everything except for God but those hopes came to nothing. The people were deceived by their own wishes. It’s okay to doubt God and ask him questions. God’s anger was ignited by the people professing their faith in God without believing it.
NOW WHAT? (How will you personally apply this passage?)
  • Do you feel the need to impress those around you? Are putting on a face for the world? Does your heart match your tongue? God knows the truth inside you and he continues to love you deeply. Take a deep breath and pause for a moment to feel the comfort of that love.
  • If you’re living amid trouble right now, seek help from God. Keep reading the Bible (like you’re doing right now!). And talk to God. He knows what’s in your heart and he’s ready to listen.
