May 18 - Ezekiel 42

Today's reading in our daily plan is Ezekiel 42. Take a moment to pray, asking God to speak to you from this passage. Then read, using the following notes and questions to help you get everything out of the passage.

SAY WHAT? (What is the passage saying?)
  • This chapter is a continuation of Ezekiel's vision in which he follows a man who is showing him around a temple. Architectural details and exact measurements are emphasized.
  • (Interestingly, in the 1950s, archaeologists discovered an ancient temple called Ain Dara that matches many of the characteristics described in the book of Ezekiel. This part of the Bible never claims that this particular temple was built, just that Ezekiel was captivated by the vision of it.)
SO WHAT? (What are the underlying principles?)
  • In the times of Ezekiel, specific details had a huge spiritual importance: specific details about buildings, specific details about how you were supposed to behave, a specific details about how you were supposed to give animal sacrifices to God to make up for your sins... the list goes on.
  • Because of the sacrifice Jesus made on the cross, we don't have to obsess over details. His relationship with us is based on love: unconditional love that doesn't change based on what we do or don't do.
NOW WHAT? (How will you personally apply this passage?)

  • Is there something you've held back from God? Talk to him honestly about that today. Because his love is unconditional, he won't love you any less because of what you're trying to hide or ignore.
