Jeremiah 47

Today's reading in our daily plan is Jeremiah 47. Take a moment to pray, asking God to speak to you from this passage. Then read, using the following notes and questions to help you get everything out of the passage.

SAY WHAT? (What is the passage saying?)
  • The Philistines had constantly battled with Israel and today’s chapter is a message from God concerning what would happen to the Philistines. God promised the land of Philistia and its allies would be humiliated and destroyed just as a flood overwhelms the land and everything in it.
  • Verse 6 is the prayer of the Philistines calling out for rest from the destruction but verse 7 answers their cry by declaring that rest will not come because God will dole out the punishment until their people are destroyed.
SO WHAT? (What are the underlying principles?)
  • Today’s chapter is a reminder that God always delivers consequences on his own timeline. The Philistines and the Israelites had fought each other for generations and God had often used the Philistines to punish the Israelites but the Philistines themselves also needed to receive their punishment. One of God’s eternal traits is justice and he judges everyone the same.
NOW WHAT? (How will you personally apply this passage?)
  • What are you feeling overwhelmed by today? Is your life flooded by fear, anxiety, or anger? Today, talk to God and share your feelings with him. If you are feeling abandoned, tell him. If you feel like you are drowning, tell him. Ask God to help you trust that he may have a different timeline than you but he has a plan for you (read Jeremiah 29:11) and that he can work all things for good (read Romans 8:28).
