Jeremiah 43

Today's reading in our daily plan is Jeremiah 43. Take a moment to pray, asking God to speak to you from this passage. Then read, using the following notes and questions to help you get everything out of the passage.

SAY WHAT? (What is the passage saying?)
  • In chapter 42, Jeremiah delivered a message to the group of Israelites who were on their way to Egypt informing them that God ordered them to stay in Judah. Today’s chapter begins immediately after Jeremiah told them this message and the people refused to believe him. Jeremiah was accused of giving a message not from God but from a man named Baruch.
  • The people did not obey God and instead went to the city of Tahpanhes in Egypt. Jeremiah and Baruch continued with them into Egypt. While they were in Tahpanhes, God instructed Jeremiah to bury some rocks in the ground and God promised that he would send the Babylonians to destroy Egypt and that the throne of King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon would be placed on top of the buried rocks. Not only would the Babylonians claim victory over Egypt, they would destroy the temples of the gods of Egypt as well.
SO WHAT? (What are the underlying principles?)
  • Today’s passage is the repetition of a pattern we have seen throughout the book of Jeremiah: the disobedience of the people of Israel. They are given the choice to be in relationship with God and receive mercy and comfort or to turn their backs on him and collect the punishment they were warned about.
  • God’s anger is never unjustified. He desires to provide for you and longs for you to have a relationship with him. He promises to support you and care for you when you draw near to him and he is open and honest with you about the consequences of turning your back on him. He will never stop pursuing you but he is also honest that there are consequences for refusing to acknowledge his power.
NOW WHAT? (How will you personally apply this passage?)
  • What patterns do you have in your life that are causing you pain? Are you struggling with doubts about your choices? Are you angry all the time? Do you have an addiction to pornography, alcohol, food, or drugs? Today, take a moment to talk to God and acknowledge one habit you have that is creating negative consequences in your life and ask him to guide you to a path with less pain.
  • One helpful way to make changes that stick is to surround yourself with people who will support you. If you have a pattern you want to change, check out Restore on Tuesday nights at Verve. Restore is a group for anyone who is struggling with a pattern in their life that is causing them pain. At Restore you will find a group of people who are working intentionally toward improving their choices and are open about sharing their stories, struggles, and successes. It’s a place you will find companions to journey with!
