Don't Give Up: Stop Feeling Sorry for Yourself

We provide questions each week based on the theme of our service for our Verve Groups to use. If you're not in a Verve Group, feel free to use them on your own.
This week we continued the series called Don't Give Up and talked about "Stop Feeling Sorry for Yourself". If you missed it, you can listen to it here.
  1. Would you rather be a tiny elephant or a giant rodent? Why?
  2. Without using names, tell us about someone you know who lives with self pity or victim mentality.
    • What do you notice about that person?
    • How does feeling sorry for themselves seem to hold them back?
  3. What about you?
    • If someone used you as their example of a person who lives with self pity or victim mentality, what evidence or examples would they probably give?
    • In what area of your life do you struggle with feeling sorry for yourself?
  4. Why do you think it can be easier for a person to feel sorry for themselves than to take personal responsibility for their problems?
  5. In the message this week, Vince encouraged us to choose not to feel sorry for yourself because of your circumstances and to choose to overcome your circumstances. He gave a bunch of examples of people who have done that. If they can, we can. How will you do this? What's your plan to overcome?
  6. Part of the plan should include controlling your thought life. Read Proverbs 23:7. How have your thoughts had power over you?
  7. Read Philippians 4:8. Do you usually obey this command by God to only let your mind focus on positive thoughts? Why or why not?
  8. What's one negative thought you need to replace with a God thought?
  9. Vince talked about how our difficulties and weaknesses can be a springboard to success and greatness. How could this happen for you?
  10. Weekly Check In Question:  What could we be praying for you this week? (Is there something good we could celebrate with you, or a challenge you need God's help with?)
