Jeremiah 23

Today's reading in our daily plan is Jeremiah 23. Take a moment to pray, asking God to speak to you from this passage. Then read, using the following notes and questions to help you get everything out of the passage.

SAY WHAT? (What is the passage saying?)

  • The passage opens with God contrasting the current corrupt leaders of Israel to the Messiah who would be a perfect leader and would come from the line of King David as God had promised.
  • God condemns the false prophets who led Israel to turn away from following God.
  • God declares that he did not send the false prophets even though they claimed to speak for him. He also illustrates his omnipresence and authority in verses 23-24.
  • The chapter concludes with God clarifying that the Israelites should not stop seeking the wisdom of God, but they should not use the phrasing of calling it “a prophecy from the Lord”.

SO WHAT? (What are the underlying principles?)

  • The people of Israel were still responsible for their own choices and actions, but leaders are also held responsible for those entrusted to their care. We look to leaders for guidance and direction and leaders are accountable to God for how they influence and lead.
  • God is everywhere, and knows all things. It is easy to assume that God does not know or care about what happens in each of our lives and at times we may question his ability to handle things beyond our control; but God reminds us repeatedly throughout the Bible that he is bigger than everything.

NOW WHAT? (How will you personally apply this passage?)

  • Do you lack guidance and leadership in your life? Are you struggling to know who to trust and who to listen to? Take a moment right now to talk to God and ask him to lead you. Tell him about a specific struggle you have today and ask for wisdom and direction.
  • Fellowship with others who know God is a great way to help you explore what it means to listen to God in your own life. Verve Groups are starting this week, and there are a lot to choose from! Find one where you can gather and flourish together over the next few months.
