March 22 - Joshua 24

Today's reading in our daily plan is Joshua 24. Take a moment to pray, asking God to speak to you from this passage. Then read, using the following notes and questions to help you get everything out of the passage.

SAY WHAT? (What is the passage saying?)
  • This is the final chapter of the book of Joshua. Joshua assembles his people and recaps the tribulations and victories the Israelites have experienced over the course of hundreds of years.
  • He ends his discourse by affirming his steadfast commitment to God, and urges his people to make an equally firm commitment.
  • This passage contains Joshua's last recorded words. Verse 29 tells us that he died at the age of 110.

SO WHAT? (What are the underlying principles?)
  • Problems are not fun when we are in the middle of them. In hindsight, however, it becomes easier to see how difficult situations helped us and grew us closer to God. We should take time to reflect on those moments and consider how they might shape the way we live today.
  • In verse 15 Joshua says, "...As for me and my household, we will serve the Lord." We need to be unwavering in our commitment to Jesus, and we need to lead others in our family to do likewise.

NOW WHAT? (How will you personally apply this passage?)
  • Take a few minutes to reflect on your spiritual journey. How has God grown you, and how has adversity strengthened your ability to love God and love people? Do you realize anything from the past that could change the way you live today? (Maybe a healthy habit you used to have, or something you learned about yourself and the way you handle conflict.)
  • As for you and your household, will you serve the Lord? How can you lead your family to more effectively love God? Maybe start setting aside time to read the Bible together, or to pray together as a family for a few minutes each day.
