February 1 - Joshua 10

Today's reading in our daily plan is Joshua 10. Take a moment to pray, asking God to speak to you from this passage. Then read, using the following notes and questions to help you get everything out of the passage.

SAY WHAT? (What is the passage saying?)
  • Yesterday we read about an unlikely alliance that formed between the Israelites (led by Joshua) and a neighboring group of people called the Gibeonites.
  • In today's reading we see the reaction by other neighboring groups to the Gibeonites' decision to join forces with the Israelites. Specifically, we read about five kings who are so upset by this that they send their armies to attack the Gibeonites and the Israelites.
  • As we've seen time and time before, God gives Joshua and his forces strength to defeat their opposition. He even goes so far as to make the sun stand still to make it easier for Joshua's forces to advance.

SO WHAT? (What are the underlying principles?)
  • Though we may not lead an army, God still wants to help us fight our battles. When you experience a difficult situation in life that creates an obstacle between you and God (or the life God wants for you), he can come alongside you and help you overcome that opposition.
  • When we live life with God, he can do huge things to lead us and others closer to him. For the Israelites, he made the sun stand still. There's no limit to how he can work in our lives when we live a life that is fully oriented around Jesus.

NOW WHAT? (How will you personally apply this passage?)
  • What seemingly insurmountable force are you up against? Is your marriage on the rocks? Are you caught up in overwhelmingly painful circumstances? Are you facing a big decision that you're not sure about? Have you lost hope? Pursue God and ask him to come alongside you to help you overcome your obstacles, and to do so in a way that will ultimately bring him glory and draw you closer to him.
