Numbers 36

Today's reading in our daily plan is Numbers 36. Take a moment to pray, asking God to speak to you from this passage. Then read, using the following notes and questions to help you get everything out of the passage.

SAY WHAT? (What is the passage saying?)
  • Back in Numbers 27:1-11 we saw that God allowed Zelophehad's daughters to inherit their father's land because he had no sons to leave the land to  (back then women were not land owners). In this chapter we learn about a complication: if those daughters married men from other tribes, the land would end up passing down to those tribes, and so the intention to keep the land in the tribe of Zelophehad would be thwarted.
  • A decision is made that Zelophehad's daughters need to marry from within their own tribe, to keep the land with that tribe.

SO WHAT? (What are the underlying principles?)
  • Verse 10 says, "So Zelophehad's daughters did as the Lord commanded Moses." There were reasons they could have balked at the decision: the amount of available single guys they could eventually marry was severely reduced; what if they fell in love with a guy from another tribe? But they didn't protest. They trusted God and did as He commanded.
  • We need to have that same spirit. We need to have a trust in God that we obey whatever He says, without complaining or procrastinating.

NOW WHAT? (How will you personally apply this passage?)
  • What is something God tells you to do that you don't like or understand? Have you been complaining about it, or putting off obedience? Do you realize that by doing that, not only are you dishonoring God, you are also hurting yourself? It's time to obey God. Spend some time talking to Him about that.
Here's a helpful video from a great resource called BibleProject that gives a quick summary of the entire book of Numbers:
