Numbers 35

Today's reading in our daily plan is Numbers 35. Take a moment to pray, asking God to speak to you from this passage. Then read, using the following notes and questions to help you get everything out of the passage.

SAY WHAT? (What is the passage saying?)
  • In this chapter God tells Moses that some of the land of Cannan should be set aside for the Levites.  God makes it clear that the Levites are to live in this land and graze their cattle in it, but they may not own the land that they will inhabit. God gives Moses specific instructions about how to divide the land:
    • 42 Cities (in which to live and raise cattle)
    • 6 Cities of Refuge (where murderers are sent to await justice)
  • God goes into great detail to define what constitutes a murderer. He makes it clear that all who commit murder should be sent to a "City of Refuge" so they won't defile the land where God will dwell with His people.

SO WHAT? (What are the underlying principles?)
  • God is detailed. He has thought through every part of our life.  He is also specific about everything that He wants us to do. Yet, in our blindness, and lack of trust, we often doubt him. Moses had to be a good listener to know God’s plan and enact it properly.  In this busy world, it’s easy to get side-tracked, to be so focused on the distractions of everyday life that we can’t hear the instructions of God. If we want to know where to go and what we should do, we must focus on God.

NOW WHAT? (How will you personally apply this passage?)
  • If you're someone who has given your life to God, take time today to thank him for his careful planning of your life and ask Him to keep you constantly aware of what he is saying.
