Numbers 30

Today's reading in our daily plan is Numbers 30. Take a moment to pray, asking God to speak to you from this passage. Then read, using the following notes and questions to help you get everything out of the passage.

SAY WHAT? (What is the passage saying?)

  • This chapter deals with vows, and we learn that vows are a serious thing. If someone makes a vow to God or to another person, "he must not break his word but must do everything he said" (verse 2).
  • The rest of the chapter details a few exceptions where a person might not be obligated to keep a vow under certain conditions.

SO WHAT? (What are the underlying principles?)

  • God takes vows seriously and if we make one we must keep it.
  • We read in Ecclesiastes 5:2-7 and James 5:12 that we, because God takes them seriously, we should be very cautious about making vows at all.
  • Jesus taught, in Matthew 5:33-37, that instead of making vows and giving big promises, we should just live in a way where we are always true to our word and do what we say. When we become that kind of person, we won't need to be saying, "I swear…" or "Really, I promise…" or "I vow that I will…" because it will become obvious that we always mean what we say.

NOW WHAT? (How will you personally apply this passage?)

  • Looking at your life, are there some vows you've made to God (or others) that you haven't kept? Do you need to fulfill an obligation you made to God (or others)?
  • And as you move forward in life, how (with God's help) can you start to live in a way that you a man, or woman, of your word, and don't make vows but simply let your yes be yes and your no be no?
