Numbers 27

Today's reading in our daily plan is Numbers 27. Take a moment to pray, asking God to speak to you from this passage. Then read, using the following notes and questions to help you get everything out of the passage.

SAY WHAT? (What is the passage saying?)

  • The Israelites are getting close to entering into the Promised Land, and are thinking about who will get what property. In the first section, the daughters of a man who had no son share their concern that they will receive no inheritance and that their family name will not be preserved. Their ability to present this concern, and the decision God gives that these daughters get the inheritance, would have been revolutionary in a time when women had virtually no rights.
  • In the second section, Moses gets to take a look at the Promised Land, but he cannot lead the Israelites into it because of a past sin. Moses talks to God about choosing a successor, and God appoints Joshua. A plan for beginning to transfer leadership is put in place.

SO WHAT? (What are the underlying principles?)

  • Both stories in this chapter have to do with what happens next after someone dies. We don't like it, but someday we are going to die. When we do, life will go on without us. But what will we hand down to those who will go on living without us? What inheritance will we leave to them? What transfer of leadership will we have enacted?

NOW WHAT? (How will you personally apply this passage?)

  • Think about the different things you will, or can, hand down after you die to those God has put in your life. You can leave a legacy of godly character and values. You can train your children (and grandchildren) to live for Jesus and be leaders in God's Kingdom. You can leave money to your family.
  • Now think about the way you are currently living. If you continue down the same path what will you actually hand down after you die to those God has put in your life?
  • Is it time to change the way you're living so your impact after you die will be what it should?
