Numbers 18

Today's reading in our daily plan is Numbers 18. Take a moment to pray, asking God to speak to you from this passage. Then read, using the following notes and questions to help you get everything out of the passage.

SAY WHAT? (What is the passage saying?)
  • In this chapter God spells out some of the duties of the priests.
  • Getting to be a priest was a gift of God (verse 7) because the priests were the arbiters of God's grace.
  • The priests were to receive from the people an offering (verses 8) to care for the priest's needs and those of their families (verse 11). In fact, the priests and their families were to enjoy the finest of the wines and grains (verse 12). Since the priest's dedicated their time to serving God and the people, they were not able to raise crops or support themselves financially in any other way.
  • The priests (Levites) were to receive the tithe from God's people, but they in turn were to worship God by tithing. In fact, they were to give the best they received back to God (verses 26-32).

SO WHAT? (What are the underlying principles?)
  • As in yesterday's chapter, we see again that God is a God of grace. He provided the priests to offer sacrifices that would atone (erase) for the people's sins (see Psalm 99:6-8). Back then, only the priests could approach God directly.
  • Jesus came to be the final and ultimate priest, and because of Him we can now go directly to God (see Hebrews 4:14-16). The Bible says that now, because of Jesus, we are all priests (see 1 Peter 2:9-10). We can all go directly to God, and even help others go to God.

NOW WHAT? (How will you personally apply this passage?)
  • Take some time to pray, thanking God for His grace, and His provision of Jesus as your High Priest who allows you to have a relationship with and go directly to God.
  • The priests of the Old Testament made it possible for people to have God in their lives. Today every believer is a priest. How seriously do you take your responsibility of making it possible for people to have God in their lives? Who has God put in your life who doesn't know Him? How can you help them take a step towards a relationship with Him?
