Numbers 9

Today's reading in our daily plan is Numbers 9. Take a moment to pray, asking God to speak to you from this passage. Then read, using the following notes and questions to help you get everything out of the passage.

SAY WHAT? (What is the passage saying?)

  • God instructs Moses to make sure the Israelites observer Passover, which is a holiday that celebrates the Israelites' journey out of Egypt.
  • As we've seen in previous weekend chapters, God lays out guidelines for people who have become "unclean" by recently coming in contact with a dead body. Here he ensures even the people who are unclean can celebrate Passover, as can people who are with the Israelites but do not share the lineage of "full" Israelites (verse 14).
  • The second part of this chapter describes a cloud that covered the Tabernacle. The cloud represent's God presence, and God used the cloud as a tool to guide the Israelites: when the cloud was over the Tabernacle, it meant they were to stay put. When it lifted, it meant they were to set out.

SO WHAT? (What are the underlying principles?)

  • God wants his people to celebrate things that are worth celebrating. If he wanted, he could have barred outsiders or unclean people from participating in the Passover celebration. Instead, he made sure they were able to participate.
  • God guides people who have decided to follow him. We may not have the benefit of a cloud that provides obvious instructions about when we should and shouldn't do something, but God is still with us and still guides us.

NOW WHAT? (How will you personally apply this passage?)

  • Do you take time to celebrate things that are worth celebrating? Commit to take a break from the hustle and bustle of life to make time to celebrate. For example, on May 25th and 26th we are doing baptisms at Verve. Baptisms are a great opportunity to celebrate the way God has changed lives of people at Verve.
  • Are you letting God guide you? Spending time talking to God and reading the Bible are some of the best ways to stay in tune with God and grow a relationship with him that will make it easier for you to discern what he does and doesn't want you to do.
