Genesis 32:22-32

Today's reading in our daily plan is Genesis 32:22-32. Take a moment to pray, asking God to speak to you from this passage. Then read, using the following notes and questions to help you get everything out of the passage.

SAY WHAT? (What is the passage saying?)
  • During a wrestling match with God, Jacob shows how strong he is. God then changes Jacob to Israel.
  • Jacob’s name change is why the nation of Israel has its name today. Israel means, “you have struggled with God and with humans and have overcome.”

SO WHAT? (What are the underlying principles?)
  • It's weird to think that God would physically wrestle with a mortal, but it proves God’s desire to be close with us. God loves us and wants a relationship with us.
  • Struggles against God don't have to be physical. We can come to God with our questions and doubts and emotions and anger; he welcomes all of these things because he wants to help us move past our hangups and into a healthier relationship with him.

NOW WHAT? (How will you personally apply this passage?)
  • Do you ever feel like you've struggled against God? Maybe not physically, but emotionally or intellectually? Are you holding in any doubts or questions or anger that you wish God would deal with? Talk to him today about anything you're feeling or thinking.
