Genesis 23

Today's reading in our daily plan is Genesis 23. Take a moment to pray, asking God to speak to you from this passage. Then read, using the following notes and questions to help you get everything out of the passage.

SAY WHAT? (What is the passage saying?)
  • In this chapter we read that Sarah (Abrahams’s wife) died after being alive for 127 years. This means she died when her son Isaac was about 28 years old.
  • We read that Abraham wanted to bury his wife, and he asked the Hittites to sell him land. Abraham had such a good name among the people that they didn’t want to sell him anything, but Abraham insisted.

SO WHAT? (What are the underlying principles?)
  • The big takeaway in this chapter is how Abraham was respected amongst people who didn’t believe as he did. Abraham must have interacted with them on a regular basis and showed them extreme love and grace for these people to accept and respect Abraham as much as they did.
  • This chapter should make us evaluate our own influence and reputation among people we interact with everyday. As followers of Jesus we are not called to seclude ourselves from society but rather interact with society in such a way that we improve it.

NOW WHAT? (How will you personally apply this passage?)
  • Do you have a reputation for being a bearer of peace and love in your sphere of influence? If not, what do you need to change to start being that kind of person today?
