Genesis 19:30-38

Today's reading in our daily plan is Genesis 19:30-38. Take a moment to pray, asking God to speak to you from this passage. Then read, using the following notes and questions to help you get everything out of the passage.

SAY WHAT? (What is the passage saying?)
  • We read about Lot’s daughters who devised a disgusting plan of getting their father drunk so they could sleep with him and become pregnant to carry on their family line.
  • Yesterday we learned that Lot wasn’t totally on board with following God’s plan for his family’s future. In this chapter we see how his children followed in the path of their parents. Later in the Bible we’ll see that Lot’s future descendants also chose not to follow God. In fact, the offspring of his daughter’s plan (the Moabites and Ammonites) became fierce enemies of God's people (the Israelites, who are the descendants of Abraham).
SO WHAT? (What are the underlying principles?)
  • God has a plan for our lives. It is sometimes tempting to try to take control of the situation and make our plan happen (as Lot's daughters did) but that is never the best option. We need to trust God with our future.
  • The way we live doesn't impact our lives, but also the lives of others, including our children. We need to be very careful about how we live, because others (perhaps especially our kids) very well may follow in our footsteps.
NOW WHAT? (How will you personally apply this passage?)
  • Is there an area of your life where you're trying to make your plan happen, even if it's not God's plan? Maybe in your job, or dating life, or finances? Commit to trusting God and living out his plan instead of yours.
  • What kind of example are you setting for other people? If you're a parent, what kind of example are you setting for your kids?
