Genesis 19:1-29

Today's reading in our daily plan is Genesis 19:1-29. Take a moment to pray, asking God to speak to you from this passage. Then read, using the following notes and questions to help you get everything out of the passage.

SAY WHAT? (What is the passage saying?)
  • Today’s reading is disturbing. First, the men in the city of Sodom wanted to brutally rape what they believed to be two men who came into town to visit Lot (Abraham’s nephew). When Lot refused, they threatened him, and the two angels saved Lot by blinding the men of Sodom.
  • Then we read about God destroying the city by raining sulfur down on it from heaven. This may strike you as harsh but remember we just read how evil these people were. Keep in mind that God promised Abraham that, if there were even a handful of good people in Sodom, God would have spared the city, but there weren’t.
  • Unfortunately Lot’s wife didn’t follow the angel’s direction and was turned into a pillar of salt.
SO WHAT? (What are the underlying principles?)
  • One takeaway is that we need to follow God. Abraham did, and he was spared. Lot did, and he was spared. Lot's wife did not, and she suffered the consequence of her choice.
NOW WHAT? (How will you personally apply this passage?)
  • Are you truly following God? Are you living as God wants and doing what he says? If not, you won't be turned into a pillar of salt, but there will always be consequences for disobedience to God.
  • So where are you not following God? What needs to change? And how will you make sure that happens?
