Genesis 9:18-28

Today's reading in our daily plan is Genesis 9:18-28. Take a moment to pray, asking God to speak to you from this passage. Then read, using the following notes and questions to help you get everything out of the passage.

SAY WHAT? (What is the passage saying?)
  • We read about Noah’s three sons. Notice the author (Moses) of Genesis informs us Ham was the father of Canaan. Later in the Old Testament we'll see that the Canaanites (the descendants of Ham) were always at odds with the rest of God's people.
  • Noah becomes a farmer then gets drunk and passes out.
  • Noah curses and blesses his various children.
SO WHAT? (What are the underlying principles?)
  • Throughout this chapter we see Noah, who is one of the heroes of the Bible, doing wrong (for instance, the Bible tells us that drunkenness is sin). This doesn't mean sin is ok. It does mean that God chooses and uses imperfect people. That is really good news, because we're all imperfect people!
  • The problem with Ham is that by his actions he doesn't honor his father. We are to honor our parents. In fact, the Bible tells us that we are to honor all people, because we should live a life of honoring God.
NOW WHAT? (How will you personally apply this passage?)
  • If you feel like you're too imperfect to be loved by God, or chosen or used by God (maybe you've woken up hungover and naked) let Noah show you that God's grace is big enough for you. So what does that mean for you? Maybe you need to say yes to God's offer and get baptized to begin a relationship with him? Perhaps you need to start volunteering at Verve? God wants you and can use you, no matter who you are or what you've done. So commit right now to take a step forward into the life he has for you this week.
  • Are there some ways you have dishonored your parents? Maybe you need to make a call and apologize today? And what are some ways you can start to really honor your parents? What is a specific thing you can do? Do it!
