Job 36

Today's reading in our daily plan is Job 36. Take a moment to pray, asking God to speak to you from this passage. Then read, using the following notes and questions to help you get everything out of the passage.

SAY WHAT? (What is the passage saying?)
  • In this chapter, Elihu continues speaking.
  • Elihu is still sure he needs to defend God against Job’s comments.
  • He still continues his line of thought that God rewards the people who live right and only those who “sin” suffer in life. The truth is that this line of thought about God is faulty. Just look at the disciples in the New Testament; the guys who followed Jesus most closely. All of them die for their faith. If Elihu’s thoughts about God were right then all Jesus’ disciples would have lived great successful lives.
SO WHAT? (What are the underlying principles?)
  • Elihu went on to tell Job to turn from evil and embrace God. The truth is that it’s BECAUSE Job was right before God that Satan wanted to test him. If Job had been “normal” and sinned then Satan wouldn’t have presented Job to God as a candidate for his “testing.” So, clearly, Elihu’s theology here was wrong. But if we were honest we think the same way today a lot of the time. Take some time today and put aside what you’ve been “taught” about God and just talk to him.
NOW WHAT? (How will you personally apply this passage?)
  • Ask God if there is anything you need to repent of or do for him. Ask him if there is anything he wants to reveal to you today about his heart. The problem is most of us learn a little of God and then live the rest of our lives on that single revelation from God. The truth is that we can never fully know God until we see him face to face. So take some time and ask him what else you need to learn of him today.
