Oct 22: John 2

Today's reading in our daily plan is John 2. Take a moment to pray, asking God to speak to you from this passage. Then read, using the following notes and questions to help you get everything out of the passage.

SAY WHAT? (What is the passage saying?)

  • Today we’re back in the book of John, where Jewish leaders encounter Jesus. Also in this chapter, we get to see Jesus perform his first miracle. Here are some things to think about:
  • Jesus turned water into wine for his first miracle, and John says this was when the disciples first put their faith in Jesus.
  • In verse six there are listed facts about the water jars. These are unnecessary details for the story but show us that John was an eyewitness to the event.
  • In verse 18 the Jewish leaders question Jesus about his authority. Jesus answers with a cryptic statement, which John mentions is about his resurrection. The answer is hard for the Jews because it expressed Jesus as superior to their religious worship. Not only was he more powerful than the temple, but he was also more important.

SO WHAT? (What are the underlying principles?)

  • Jesus’ first miracle turned something normal and ceremonial into something special and festive. He can do the same in our lives.

NOW WHAT? (How will you personally apply this passage?)

  • What mundane aspects of your life with Jesus need to be made festive? What aspects of God do you treat with little thought that need to be approached with great care and reverence? What parts of your relationship with Jesus are merely religious and need to be turned into a joyful activity? Ask Jesus to turn the water of your life into wine.
