Job 2

Today's reading in our daily plan is Job 2. Take a moment to pray, asking God to speak to you from this passage. Then read, using the following notes and questions to help you get everything out of the passage.

SAY WHAT? (What is the passage saying?)

  • We’re not sure how much time elapsed in between the events of chapter 1 and the beginning of chapter 2 but the dialogue would appear that some time has passed.
  • We see that God allowed Satan to inflict pain upon Job’s body but not kill him. Satan immediately gives Job painful sores all over his body.
  • Notice how Job still refused to say anything bad against God.
  • This chapter closes with three of Job’s friends coming to visit him. We will read more about their conversation in the coming chapters. In fact, most of the book of Job is about the conversation between Job and his friends.

SO WHAT? (What are the underlying principles?)

  • Job understood that he wasn’t promised a great life by following God. Job was somehow just happy with knowing and serving God, no matter how good or bad life got. We’re not promised a perfect life when we choose to follow God but he does promise to always be there with us. And somehow, when times get really tough; that’s enough.
  • Things just got worse for Job in this chapter. In the last chapter, Satan took everything from Job except his wife. In this chapter we may see why; she tells Job to just curse God and die. . . Ok poor joke, but her advise was bad nonetheless.

NOW WHAT? (How will you personally apply this passage?)

  • Just when Job thought it couldn’t get any worse it did. Have you ever had a time like this in your life? How did you handle it? If you’re like me and most people probably not so well.
