Jun 2: Genesis 44

Today's reading in our daily plan is Genesis 44. Take a moment to pray, asking God to speak to you from this passage. Then read, using the following notes and questions to help you get everything out of the passage.

SAY WHAT? (What is the passage saying?)
  • In this chapter we see the crazy scheme of Joseph continue in which he “frames” his younger brother to look guilty of stealing from him.
  • Joseph’s brothers deny the accusations and rashly say they will put to death any one of their brothers who stole. But then they “find out” it was the youngest, whom their father loved. However, Joseph says he will only be a slave and the others are free to leave.
  • Then Judah pleas to take his brother’s place as a slave in order to spare his father of any more grief. Clearly the guilt of what he did to Joseph and the pain it caused his father was weighing heavy on Judah.
SO WHAT? (What are the underlying principles?)
  • In the next chapter, we will continue to see how this plays out. But for now, let’s remember that if we always do what’s right we can have a clear conscious. Judah was living with tremendous guilt for selling his brother into slavery and telling his father he had died.
NOW WHAT? (How will you personally apply this passage?)
  • If Judah had done what was right all along he wouldn’t have had to live with such a heavy burden. How are you living?
