May 26: Genesis 42

Today's reading in our daily plan is Genesis 42. Take a moment to pray, asking God to speak to you from this passage. Then read, using the following notes and questions to help you get everything out of the passage.

SAY WHAT? (What is the passage saying?)

  • In this chapter, we read about Joseph’s reunion with his brothers who sold him into slavery.
  • Notice that Joseph’s brothers didn’t recognize Joseph. So he could have punished them, not sold them food or even had them killed and no one would have known. He was in the position to do all of this, but he didn’t.
  • Instead, Joseph set out an elaborate plan to reveal his new self. We will read more about his transformation in the coming chapters.

SO WHAT? (What are the underlying principles?)

  • This chapter begins a really good story of how Joseph reveals himself to his family. It’s crazy enough that it should be in a movie. But, interestingly, you’ll notice that if his family had trusted God, the plan would have been revealed more quickly.

NOW WHAT? (How will you personally apply this passage?)

  • We should take note that we should always trust God even when it would appear that all hope is lost. God is always in control.
