April 22: Genesis 33

Today's reading in our daily plan is Genesis 33. Take a moment to pray, asking God to speak to you from this passage. Then read, using the following notes and questions to help you get everything out of the passage.

SAY WHAT? (What is the passage saying?)
  • Remember all the livestock and gifts Jacob had sent to his brother Esau to earn favor in his eyes? Notice the warm embrace Esau gave Jacob. There were many reasons for Esau to be mad at Jacob and no one would have blamed him for holding a grudge.
  • However, Esau clearly forgives his brother and embraces him like a long lost family.

SO WHAT? (What are the underlying principles?)
  • But notice that Jacob still didn’t trust Esau (or God’s protection) and went elsewhere to set up housing. This will be fleshed out later.
  • Forgiveness is the theme of this chapter. Like I said, Esau had many legitimate reasons to be mad at his brother but he wasn’t. God had blessed both brothers as he promised and Esau didn’t take the gifts offered to him until Jacob insisted.

NOW WHAT? (How will you personally apply this passage?)
  • Do you have anyone you need to forgive today? You may have a good reason to be angry but it’s always better for us to forgive. Bitterness can eat us away from the inside out. Ask God to help you be quick to forgive.
