Psalms 97 and 98

Today's reading in our daily plan is Psalms 97 & 98. Take a moment to pray, asking God to speak to you from this passage. Then read, using the following notes and questions to help you get everything out of the passage.

SAY WHAT? (What is the passage saying?)

  • In Psalm 97 we are reminded of God’s glory. The writer describes God in such an awesome way. Then we are warned that those who worship idols will one day be put to shame when they finally meet God face to face. The chapter ends telling us how God protects the people who follow him.
  • Psalm 98 talks about how we should praise God with music. This chapter even depicts nature worshiping God through music.

SO WHAT? (What are the underlying principles?)

  • There are many things we put before God that we think are harmless because they’re not real idols. Things like: financial gain, the opinions of others, sex, porn, success, our appearance and many more.

NOW WHAT? (How will you personally apply this passage?)

  • In Psalm 97 we are told that people who worship idols will one day be embarrassed they put their faith in something that wasn’t real. Maybe you have physical idols in your home that you think are just decoration. In light of this chapter, it would be wise to get rid of them.
  • Ask God to reveal to you what you’re putting before him in your life. What are you placing a higher priority than God is your life?
