Psalms 73

Today's reading in our daily plan is Psalm 73. Take a moment to pray, asking God to speak to you from this passage. Then read, using the following notes and questions to help you get everything out of the passage.

SAY WHAT? (What is the passage saying?)

  • The writer of this psalm opens by talking about how God cares for people who are pure in heart. Then he candidly writes about how he almost walked away from God because he wanted the “good life” more.
  • He describes how people around him seemed to have it all. However, on closer examination, they didn’t care about anyone but themselves.
  • He tells how when he took time to seek God again he realized this wasn’t the way he wanted to live. Then he felt horrible for leaving God to follow after a worthless lifestyle that was only superficial.
  • The writer closes by saying that a relationship with God is the only thing that satisfies him.

SO WHAT? (What are the underlying principles?)

  • We can all understand how the writer of this psalm felt when he wrote the words we read today because we’ve all been tempted to indulge in temporary pleasures.

NOW WHAT? (How will you personally apply this passage?)

  • Are there any areas in your life right now that you’re compromising your relationship with God? First, ask God to forgive you for ignoring him and putting him second to other things.

Now, what are the steps you need to take to grow closer to God again? Ask God to help you realize he’s the only source of true fulfillment in life.
