Psalms 82 and 83

Today's reading in our daily plan is Psalms 82 & 83. Take a moment to pray, asking God to speak to you from this passage. Then read, using the following notes and questions to help you get everything out of the passage.

SAY WHAT? (What is the passage saying?)

  • Psalm 82 talks about how God presides over all earthly rulers (“gods”). Ultimately no matter how “high” a person climbs on earth he will one day die and face the true God over all things. This should be a sobering thought for us all to remain humble.
  • Psalm 83 starts by the writer reminding God that the enemies of the nation of Israel are plotting against them. The writer asks God to defeat them just as he had with other rulers who invaded Israel. He asks this so that the other nations will know that their God is the only living God.

SO WHAT? (What are the underlying principles?)

  • In reading the Bible, it’s clear that God values humility in us. So we should make it a point to always remain humble.

NOW WHAT? (How will you personally apply this passage?)

  • Take an honest look inside yourself to see if you need to become more humble. It’s always better for us to realize we need to be humble and work on it instead of having to be humbled.
