Proverbs 18

Today's reading in our daily plan is Proverbs 18. Take a moment to pray, asking God to speak to you from this passage. Then read, using the following notes and questions to help you get everything out of the passage.

SAY WHAT? (What is the passage saying?)

  • There are quite a few verses in this chapter that address the words we speak. The writer warns us that our words can bring our downfall and even at times welcome physical violence. In verse 21 we read, the words we speak can bring life and death. That’s a pretty bold statement but it shows us how important our words are.
  • In verse ten we’re reminded that God wants to be our safe place to find rest when times are tough.
  • Verse 12 talks about humility which is one of God’s favorite character traits to find in us.
  • We are also told that if we are wise we will seek out people around us who are discerning.

SO WHAT? (What are the underlying principles?)

  • Do you make it a practice to think before you speak or speak before you think? If we take the advice we find in the chapter to heart we will carefully choose our words before we speak.

NOW WHAT? (How will you personally apply this passage?)

  • Are you going through a difficult time right now? Hopefully, verse 10 will encourage you to find rest in God. Ask God to help you have humility and to be wise with your words. If we focus just on these two points (humility and wise words) we will save ourselves from a lot of pain in life.
