Proverbs 14

Today's reading in our daily plan is Proverbs 14. Take a moment to pray, asking God to speak to you from this passage. Then read, using the following notes and questions to help you get everything out of the passage.

SAY WHAT? (What is the passage saying?)
  • Verse 1 could apply to both men or women. The idea is that we can build up those in our home and develop a good family structure by the way we put God first and talk lovingly to each other. Or we can destroy it by not doing these things and living selfish lives.
  • Verse 3 should make us want to be wise. I mean seriously who likes to get hit with rods.
  • Verse 14 encourages us to keep doing good because the 'faithless' will get caught in the end.
  • Have you ever desired that fictional 'fountain of youth'? Well, we don’t have that but we can learn how to get the 'fountain of life' from verse 27. It teaches us that fearing the Lord keeps us from getting tripped up and brings us life.

SO WHAT? (What are the underlying principles?)
  • We all struggle with seeing people who we know aren’t doing right but still get rewarded in some way. Even if we never receive a reward we can have comfort in knowing we have integrity and God favors that.
NOW WHAT? (How will you personally apply this passage?)
  • The book of Proverbs is sometimes called the book of wisdom. Any chapter in Proverbs has something that can apply to your life. What was the verse that really struck a chord with you today? Maybe it was the first verse.
  • Do you need to be more intentional about 'building' your family a home? Or do you need to make amends with someone? Maybe you just needed to be encouraged to keep your integrity strong. What verse was it for you? How will you apply that to your life?
