Proverbs 16

Today's reading in our daily plan is Proverbs 18. Take a moment to pray, asking God to speak to you from this passage. Then read, using the following notes and questions to help you get everything out of the passage.

SAY WHAT? (What is the passage saying?)

  • In the second verse, we read about how even if we do the right things in other’s eyes God sees what our motives are. He’s just as concerned with why we do things as he is with the things we do.
  • There are many verses that speak favorably about humility in this chapter, even so much that the writer said pride goes before destruction. Look again at verses like 5 and 18.
  • We also read about how our words can bring healing in verse 24. Which, would mean the opposite is true as well.

SO WHAT? (What are the underlying principles?)

  • Verse 31 at first sounds like gray hair should be valued. Does that mean we shouldn’t dye our hair? Not necessarily. The verse is talking about growing old and living a life following the Lord; the writer states that’s attained through righteous living.

NOW WHAT? (How will you personally apply this passage?)

  • What would God see if he looked at the motive behind the good things you do? Is humility a character trait you value in yourself as much as God does? Do you carefully use your words to bring healing to those around you?
