I Should On Myself

We provide questions each week based on the theme of our service for our Micro Groups to use. If you're not in a Verve Micro Group, feel free to use them on your own.

This week we started a new series called Should Happens and talked about "I Should On Myself". If you missed it, you can listen to it here.

  1. Can you think of a time when you got frustrated with or mad at yourself? What was it about? OR: Can you think of something that kind of annoys you about yourself?
  2. A "should" is an unfair expectation we put on ourselves, or others, or others put on us.
    • Why do you think it's so easy to have these expectations?
  3. What are some expectations you have for yourself, that might not be completely fair or realistic? They might be for your career, or spiritually, or relationally...
  4. Where do you think the expectations you have for yourself come from?
    • Someone else (maybe a parent or sibling)?
    • Comparing ourselves to someone else?
    • A self-initiated internal drive?
    • Something else?
  5. The answer to "shoulding" on ourselves is grace. Jesus said, "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light" (Matthew 11:28-30).
    • In what ways do you feel "weary and burdened"?
    • Jesus offers you rest. In what ways has knowing Jesus given you rest?
    • If coming to Jesus hasn't really given you rest, do you think it may be that you haven't really taken his "yoke upon you" and haven't learned from him?
    • When Jesus says to take his yoke and learn from him, he means that he has a way of living that he wants to teach us. It's a way of living that is very different from the way people typically live.
    • What do you think makes Jesus' grace-based way of living different than the typical way people live?
    • What is one change you could make that would help you to more live out the way of Jesus?
  6. Weekly Check In Question:  What could we be praying for you this week? (Is this there something good we could celebrate with you, or a challenge you need God's help with?)
