Questions: You Deserve To Be Happy

We provide questions each week based on the theme of our service for our Micro Groups to use. If you're not in a Verve Micro Group, feel free to use them on your own.

This week we continued our series called You Deserve To Be Happy and talked about "Flip The Script" If you missed it, you can listen to it here.

  1. What's the first thing that comes to mind when you hear the word "happy"?
  2. Most of us are tempted to believe there's something we're missing, or don't have enough of, that would make us happy if we just had it. What are you tempted to think you need more of to be happy?
  3. In this week's message, Vince shared a path many people take:
    • Believe whatever makes you happy must be right and whatever makes you unhappy must be wrong.
    • Believe discomfort, delay or inconvenience cannot be God's will.
    • Worship comfort and money and pleasure.
    • Believe that God exists to serve you.
    • Possibly walk away from God because he's not giving you what you want.
  4. When have you seen this kind of thinking driving you and your feelings about God?
  5. Our culture says happiness is found in pursuing pleasure. God says happiness is found in pursuing him. Check out these Bible verses:
    • "Delight yourself in the Lord" (Psalm 37:4)
    • "Be glad in the Lord" (Psalm 32:11)
    • "Serve the Lord with gladness" (Psalm 100:2)
    • "Happy are those whose God is the Lord" (Psalm 144:15)
    • "Rejoice in the Lord always" (Philippians 4:4)
  6. Why do you think it could be true that real, lasting happiness is found in pursing and knowing God?
  7. Have you ever experienced this, or known someone who seemed to? What was it like?
  8. Read Philippians 4:11-13, "I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do all this through him who gives me strength."
  9. Paul could have contentment in any circumstance. What are some circumstances you find it difficult to be happy in? How do you think having more faith in, and a deeper relationship with, Jesus could help you to be content even in those circumstances?
  10. Prayer Question:  What could we be praying for you this week? (Is this there something good we could celebrate with you, or a challenge you need God's help with?)
