Questions: From Atheist to Agnostic

We provide questions each week based on the theme of our service for our Micro Groups to use. If you're not in a Verve Micro Group, feel free to use them on your own.

This week we started a new series called 4 Steps To Jesus and talked about "From Atheist to Agnostic" If you missed it, you can listen to it here.

  1. To whatever degree you currently do or don't believe in God and the Bible, what would you say were some of the major influences that led you to where you are in your faith?
  2. Vince said, "If our faith can't hold up under the microscope of science, we should just pack up and go home." Do you typically think of faith and science as working together, or as working against each other? Why?
  3. One reason some doubt God's existence is because of intellectual issues they have with faith. What are some "objections" people have to the possibility of God's existence?
    • Have you found that there are reasonable answers for these questions?
  4. Some people don't believe, or don't want to believe, because of lifestyle issues. It may be a sin they don't want to stop committing, or a pride that doesn't want to submit to God. Think through your past, do you see any lifestyle issues that have kept you from believing or from fully giving your life to Jesus?
  5. Vince explained that atheism is a certainty about the absence of God. He talked about how there are some things we just cannot be sure about, like the origin of the universe, and so how whether we believe there is a God or believe there is not a God, it requires faith. Does that make sense to you? Why or why not?
  6. If you were to talk to someone who said they were an atheist, what do you think would be the best way to get them to reconsider the possibility that their might be a God who can be known and who loves them?
  7. Who do you need to invite to come to the rest of this series and, especially, for Easter at Verve?
  8. Prayer Question:  What could we be praying for you this week? (Is this there something good we could celebrate with you, or a challenge you need God's help with?)
