November 10 - John 14

Today's reading in our daily plan is John 14. Take a moment to pray, asking God to speak to you from this passage. Then read, using the following notes and questions to help you get everything out of the passage.

SAY WHAT? (What is the passage saying?)
  • In this chapter Jesus interacts with and teaches his disciples. He shares many important principles that we need to know, and which we'll consider in the "So What?" section.

SO WHAT? (What are the underlying principles?)
  • “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (verse 6). This very exclusive truth is hard to swallow in our pluralistic culture. But because Jesus is the only way to God it's important that everyone knows it, and knows Jesus.
  • "Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father" (verse 9). Here Jesus explains that he and God are the same. Jesus is God in the flesh.
  • “I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing. He will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father” (verse 12). Jesus taught people about God, healed miraculously, and perfectly followed God’s will. While it is a tall order to do these things, Jesus didn’t leave us to ourselves. After his death and resurrection, God’s Holy Spirit (talked about later in this chapter) lives inside Jesus’ followers and enables them to know and do the will of God.
  • “You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it” (verse 14). This doesn't mean that Jesus gives us whatever we want when we use his name. The “in my name” qualifier means when we ask according to his’ will. If you ask God to do something that is according to what He wants, it will happen!
  • “If you love me, you will obey what I command” (verse 15). Loving God means obeying God. And if we don't obey, it's a love issue.
  • “But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and remind you of everything I have said to you” (verse 26). Jesus promises to send the Spirit of God to live in us and to counsel us and to teach us what we need to know to live for God.

NOW WHAT? (How will you personally apply this passage?)
  • This chapter is filled with important teaching from Jesus. What parts do you find challenging? What did you really need to hear? How do you need to live differently because of these teachings?
