Questions: Discipline

We provide questions each week based on the theme of our service for our Micro Groups to use. If you're not in a Verve Micro Group, feel free to use them on your own.

This week we continued our series called A Big Fish Tale and talked about "Discipline" If you missed it, you can listen to it here.
  1. What is a memorable experience of you being disciplined as a child, or of you having to discipline your child?
  2. Read Hebrews 12:7-11
  3. This passage is saying that when we are going in the wrong direction, God will provide "discipline" (consequences, pain) to alert us that we're doing wrong, so we'll turn around. Can you think of a time when you experienced God's discipline?
  4. When you experience something painful, do you ever think that it may be God trying to get you to turn around? Why or why not?
  5. Think about Jonah. He was running from God, going in the wrong direction, then ends up in the belly of a "great fish." Was getting sucked up by the fish a good thing or a bad thing?
  6. In the message, Vince asked, "Would you rather be on a boat going in the wrong direction or in a fish going in the right one?" Where in your life might you be in a fish (a painful situation) that is actually forcing you to go in the right direction?
  7. God could have given up on Jonah, but instead, he gave him a second chance to repent and to do the right thing. That second chance came in the form of a fish. Why do you think God didn't just give up on Jonah?
  8. How do you feel knowing God won't just give up on you?
  9. Knowing He won't give up on you, what action should you take?
  10. Prayer Question:  What could we be praying for you this week? (Is this there something good we could celebrate with you, or a challenge you need God's help with?)
