Questions: Why Would God Restrict Our Freedom By Giving Us So Many Rules?

We provide questions each week based on the theme of our service for our Micro Groups to use. If you're not in a Verve Micro Group, feel free to use them on your own.

This week we continued our new series Why Would God and talked about "Why Would God Restrict Our Freedom By Giving Us So Many Rules?" If you missed it, you can listen to it here.
  1. Why do you think people tend to hate rules and want to rebel against authority?
  2. Do you think most people view God as very into giving and holding people to lots of rules? Why or why not?
  3. When God made the world the way He wanted, there was only one rule. (Don't eat from one of the many trees.) Some believe the reason there was a rule at all was to teach people to make God their authority and submit their lives to Him. What do you think of that idea?
  4. Vince said a big part of the reason God had to establish His authority is because God is all about our freedom, but we can't be truly free apart from God. How have you found it to be true that a person can't have true freedom apart from God?
  5. Vince said that when we use our freedom apart from God (and His will) we can actually end up losing freedom. Have you ever seen this in your life?
  6. The Bible says:
    • John 8:32-36, "Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free. ... So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed."
    • 2 Corinthians 3:17, "Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom."
    • Galatians 5:1, "It is for freedom that Christ has set us free."
    • Galatians 5:13, "You ... were called to be free."
  7. Why do you think our freedom is such a big deal to God?
  8. Vince said we should obey God not only because it's for our best, but also because God is worth obeying. What do you know about God that would lead you to say He's worth obeying?
  9. Accountability Question:  How have I been inviting God into all my decisions?
  10. Prayer Question:  What could we be praying for you this week? (Is this there something good we could celebrate with you, or a challenge you need God's help with?)
