Questions: Pitfall!

We provide questions each week based on the theme of our service for our Micro Groups to use. If you're not in a Verve Micro Group, feel free to use them on your own.

This week we continued our series Retro Arcade and talked about "Pitfall!" If you missed it, you can listen to it here.
  1. The game Pitfall is about a treasure seeker (much like Indiana Jones). If you could go out seeking some great treasure, what might it be?
  2. God tells us, in Jeremiah 29, "I know the plans I have for you, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future." God has a path for us. The center of this path is God first, others before ourselves. We don't worry about ourselves, because we trust God to take care of us. If we live the way God wants us to live, we will experience blessings along the way. How have you experienced this in your life?
  3. Unfortunately, there are pitfalls along the way. As we progress through life, there are a lot of things that can pull us away from putting God first, and tempt us to put ourselves before others. How have you experienced this in your life?
  4. Read Matthew 4:1-11
  5. We get the idea in this passage that some of the pitfalls we experience in life come from the devil. What do you think of that idea? How have you experienced it?
  6. Read James 1:13-15.
  7. We get the idea in this passage that some of the pitfalls we experience in life come from ourselves, from our own selfish desires. What do you think of that idea? How have you experienced it?
  8. The Bible says in 1 Timothy 6:9 that we "fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desire that plunge men into ruin and destruction." Looking back, is there a temptation you fell into that you can now see started with a foolish and harmful desire, and that ruined you in some way?
  9. Vince said to avoid the pitfalls we need to first identify our personal weakness. What would you say are one or two of your significant weak spots?
  10. We also learned that we need to seek God's help in creating new ruts. We have a certain thought process we have typically fallen into with our weak areas, and it leads us to sin. So we need to create a new thought process we fall into with temptation, that will lead us not to sin. The Bible says, "we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ" (2 Corinthians 10:5). One of the best ways to do this is by memorizing Bible verses having to do with your area of temptation. Have you ever done that?
  11. Why don't we all commit to finding and memorizing a Bible verse or two that we can remember and quote when we're tempted. We can check in with each other next week to see if we've all done it.
  12. Accountability Question:  How have you allowed God and a few friends to see and deal with your hurts and hang-ups this week?
  13. Have I allowed God and a few friends to see and deal with my hurts and hang-ups this week?
  14. Prayer Question:  What could we be praying for you this week? (Is this there something good we could celebrate with you, or a challenge you need God's help with?)
