Dec 15: Ecclesiastes 8

We’re reading Ecclesiastes chapter 8 today in the Verve Bible Reading Plan.
  1. In the opening lines the author reminds us that wisdom is valuable.
  2. He goes on to remind his audience to obey their ruler. This was especially important to the Israelites because they specifically asked God for a human king, so the author was reminding them to be loyal to the king they had asked for. However, this also applies to us today. We should support and pray for our leaders, even if we don’t like everything they do. As long as it doesn’t cause us to sin we should follow the laws we are given.
  3. The author also says bad things happen to good people and good things happen to bad people; this is something we can’t fully understand (nor is it something we like). However, he says he knows it’s better to do good because we will eventually answer to God for the things we do.
The author closes with saying we can’t fully understand what God does and how He interacts with creation. But in all of this his undertone is one that trusts God no matter what.

This is a great takeaway for us. Life is crazy and often painful and confusing but we serve a God who loves us and is faithful to us, even if we can’t see it. Ask God to help you be faithful to him and love him as well. Also, make an effort to see God working in your life today. We might be surprised by how much He is up to.
