Nov 9: John 16

John 16

Jesus continues to earnestly teach his disciples about his coming death and resurrection as well as the Holy Spirit. He tells them that, in addition to teaching them all things, the Holy Spirit will convict the world. He will convict everyone of three things:
  1. Sin: they haven’t believed (trusted) in Jesus.
  2. Righteousness: Jesus is the only way to the Father.
  3. Judgment: they will be judged if they continue to refuse Jesus.
Jesus also talks about his coming death and resurrection, but his disciples aren’t putting it together. The disciples finally understand after Jesus talks more directly about it, or so John claims, I think it’s still a little fuzzy. Jesus then knows that his teaching is done and leaves them with these encouraging final words: “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

Those last words of this chapter are great encouragement for those who follow Jesus. Consider memorizing them so that when you get trouble from your friends, family, church, or the world for following Jesus, you will remember that Jesus has already won.
